Iceland had cowboys before America existed
Since the Viking Age — over a thousand years before the Wild West — Icelandic farmers have been riding horses through the highlands, rounding up herds and driving them home. They just did not wear the hats.
Every September, Réttir takes place across Iceland — the ancient tradition of gathering horses and sheep from the mountains on horseback. Around 200 roundup events happen nationwide. It ends with a party called Réttaball — food, drinks and celebration.

Réttir — The Viking Roundup
Every September, Icelandic farmers ride on horseback into the highlands to gather thousands of horses and sheep. Around 200 roundup events happen across the country — the world oldest cowboy tradition, dating back to 874 AD.
Réttaball — The After Party
After the roundup, everyone gathers for Réttaball — food, drinks and celebration. Volunteers get paid in beer and good company. Sound familiar? That is basically what we do here every night.
The Icelandic Horse — Built for This
Icelandic horses have roamed free in the mountains since 874 AD, shaped by a thousand years of volcanic terrain. Tough, independent, and impossible to forget — just like the bar named after their riders.
